The President and the government of Cyprus call on Turkey to put an end to the occupation of the island’s northern third and abandon its intransigent positions that are not conducive to a settlement.

Forty-three years ago to this day the Turkish military launched its second offensive against the Republic of Cyprus, in full violation of international law, including the UN Charter, despite the ceasefire that had been agreed.

The Municipality of Famagusta has called on the Turkish government to return the town of Famagusta to its legitimate inhabitants, and has also called on the international community and the UN to exert their influence on Ankara to change its intransigent policy.

5. Cyprus’ GDP grew by 3.5% during 2017 second quarter, Finance Minister hails “strong growth”

Cyprus’ GDP grew by 3.6% in real terms during the second quarter of 2017, compared to the corresponding quarter of 2016. According to a Flash Estimate by the Statistical Service, the GDP growth rate in real terms is estimated at 3.5% based on seasonally and working day adjusted data. Finance Minister Harris Georgiades says the results reflect “the economy’s strong growth”.CNA
