Cyprus has upgraded its role in regional policy and in the EU, Foreign Minister says
Cyprus aims to ensure that there is security and cooperation in the region of the Eastern Mediterranean, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides stated on Friday, at a press conference during which he presented the work of his Ministry. Kasoulides strongly denied a report published by the Iraqi website claiming that fifteen Saudi Arabian warplanes are stationed in Cyprus and are set to attack Hezbollah positions in Lebanon.

3. Cyprus ratifies the CoE Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women

The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus to the Council of Europe Ambassador Spyros Attas met on November 10th with the Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe Gabriella Battaini Dragoni to whom he deposited on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus the instrument of ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence.

Parliament adopts resolution on the rise of far right in Europe

5. The House of Representatives expressed on Friday its deep concern over the rise of the far right, neofascism and racism in Europe through a resolution which it adopted by majority. The resolution was adopted by 37 votes for and 2 against cast by the two MPs belonging to the National Popular Front (ELAM).

6. German Oncology Center opens in Limassol

The German Oncology Center, officially opened it gates on Friday, in Ayios Athanassios, Limassol, aiming to offer quality but also unique services to the entire island.

It is the first oncology centre to open in Limassol which will mean that cancer patients from Pafos and Limassol will no longer have to make to long trip to Nicosia for treatment.

7. IOC presents former EU Commissioner Vassiliou with “Women and Sport Award 2017”

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has recently presented former European Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou with the “Women and Sports Award 2017.” It is the first time a Cypriot candidate is chosen for this award, the Cyprus Olympic Committee says in a press release.

8. Casual staff in public sector grows increasing government workforce

Government labour force increased by 1,163 persons in October, compared to the previous month of the year, as a result of an increase in the casual staff by 1,187. According to figures published on Friday by the Statistical Service, the casual staff in the government sector increased due to an increase of the staff in education by 593 and the security forces by 581, as compared to the previous month. The casual staff among hourly paid workers was reduced.

9. National road transport increased between April – June

National road transport increased by 63.4% in April - June 2017, compared to the corresponding period of 2016, the Statistical Service of Cyprus reported on Friday. International road transport increased by 16.9% in April - June 2017, compared to the corresponding period of 2016, Cystat said.

10. President of the Cyprus Badminton Federation elected member of the COMEBA Board

The President of the Cyprus Badminton Federation (COM) Efthymios Polydorou has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Confederation of Mediterranean Badminton (COMEBA). The COMEBA General Assembly was held on the 28th October at the Training Centre of the Turkish Badminton Federation, in Ankara.CNA
