1. National Council convenes on Monday

The National Council, top advisory body to the President of the Republic on the Cyprus issue, convened on Monday morning under President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades. President Anastasiades was expected to inform the members of the Council about the contacts he held in New York, in September, in the sidelines of the 72nd UN General Assembly session.

2. We will continue our efforts to reunite Cyprus, President says

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades reassured the people of Cyprus that efforts to reach a solution to the Cyprus problem and reunify the country will continue, through the peace talks. In statements after Sunday’s military parade on the occasion of Cyprus’ Independence Day, in Nicosia, President Anastasiades congratulated the National Guard on an "impressive parade", saying that we celebrate the Independence Day with proof of our decision to modernize the Armed Forces in order to be able to respond both to our European obligations and the defensive needs of our homeland.

3. Greek Defence Minister says that Cyprus is never far away for Greece

For Greece, Cyprus is never far away, Greek National Defence Minister Panos Kammenos said, after the military parade that took place in Nicosia on Sunday, on the occasion of Cyprus’ Independence Day. Kammenos represented the Greek government at the celebrations for Cyprus’ Independence Day. It is noted that for the first time since 2001 Greek F16 aircraft flew over the military parade.

4. UK Foreign Secretary wants to build on "substantial gains" produced during recent talks on Cyprus problem

UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has said that the recent talks for the reunification of Cyprus have produced “substantial gains” which he intends to “build on” and “take forward”. He also expressed certainty that the relationship between Cyprus and the UK will be “fantastic” in the post-Brexit era. Johnson attended a ‘Conservative Friends of Cyprus’ event on the sidelines of the ruling party’s annual conference, organised in Manchester this year.

5. House President: Gandhi’s path an inspiration in confronting global and regional issues

Mahatma Gandhi’s enlightened path can be an inspiration in confronting many global and regional problems, through wisdom, an open mind, mutual respect and understanding, President of the House of Representatives Demetris Syllouris pointed out on Monday. Addressing a ceremony at the bust of Mahatma Gandhi, next to the parliament building, on the occasion of the anniversary of the birth of Gandhi, in the presence of the High Commissioner of India in Nicosia, Syllouris said Gandhi was “probably the most eminent and influential politician in the history of mankind.”

6. Hoyer stresses Cyprus is a “success story”

President of the European Investment Bank (ΕΙΒ) Werner Hoyer said on Monday that Cyprus is a success story. Hoyer told the press, after a meeting he had with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades, at the Presidential Palace, that he had “an intensive talk with the President of the Republic” and “a very good exchange of views”.
