1. Cyprus steps up security amid reports of a heightened risk of terror attacks in Europe

Police in Cyprus have stepped up security measures at the Republic’s ports and airports after a Brussels alert about a possible terrorist attack against a European country.
The message was sent to Brussels, through Twitter alerting travellers of a heightened risk of terror attacks in Europe. All European countries were immediately informed.
2. Cyprus President sends letters to UN and foreign governments on the resumption of the peace talks

Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades has reiterated the Greek Cypriot side`s determination to return to the negotiating table after good preparation and within the framework set out by the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
The President has also said that he has sent letters to that effect to the UN Secretary-General, the permanent members of the Security Council and foreign governments.
3. Foreign Ministry monitors closely developments in Mexico

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Friday that it is monitoring closely developments in Mexico, hit by a deadly 8.2 magnitude earthquake as it faces threat from Hurricane Katia.
4. President Anastasiades to announce his candidacy for 2018 elections on 14 October

The President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades is set to announce his decision to seek a second term in office, in view of the 2018 presidential elections, Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides has told CNA.
5. Cyprus growth rate at 3.6% in Q2

Cyprus’ growth rate in real terms stood at 3.6% in the second quarter of the year, the Statistical Service announced on Friday. At the same time, Cyprus’ trade deficit recorded an annual increase of €264 mn in the first half of the year.

6. Cyta and Lebanese Telecommunications Ministry affirm strategic cooperation

The state-owned Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA) and the Lebanese Ministry of Telecommunications affirmed their strategic cooperation, CYTA said in a press releases issued on Friday.
According to Cyta, Jamal Al Jarrah, the Lebanese Minister of Telecommunications carried out yesterday an official visit to Cyta and met with the Authority’s President Rena Panou Rouvitha.
7. Low levels of literacy in Cyprus, the Organisation for the Promotion of Literacy says

Cyprus, just like the rest of Europe, continues to show low levels of literacy, that is poor performance in basic writing skills, reading, simple mathematical skills and speech comprehension, said the President of the Pancyprian Organisation for the Promotion of Literacy Zaharoula Mala.

8. Cyprus wins first bronze medal in World Shotgun Championship in Moscow

Cyprus has won its first medal, the bronze medal, at the ISSF World Shotgun Championship, currently underway in Moscow, in the women’s open skeet. According to the Cyprus Sports Association correspondent in Russia, Andreas Lazanitis, the Cypriot champion Andri Eleftheriou on the second day of the women`s skeet events reached the final and managed to win the bronze medal.CNA
