1. Cyprus has a new active role on security and stability in the region, President stresses

Cyprus has a new, active role on security, on stability and on crisis management in the region, President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades has stated, noting that developments in the field of hydrocarbons discoveries have rendered the country a pillar of peace and stability in the wider region. The President was speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of Deputy Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Andreas Markides. President Anastasiades also delivered a speech at an event organised by the occupied municipality of Lysi, saying it is not possible to survive having as guarantors those who invaded us and Cyprus, as a European country, does not need guarantees nor does it need the presence of Turkish army and rights of intervention.

2. Greece is pursuing a viable Cyprus settlement

Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos said Greece is pursuing the soonest, a fair and viable solution to the Cyprus problem. Speaking during an official dinner on Thursday night, hosted to honour French counterpart Emmanuel Macron who is on a two-day visit to Athens, Pavlopoulos also said it is incomprehensible that the Republic of Cyprus, as a full member of the EU, to have restricted sovereignty, caused by occupation troops and anachronistic guarantees by third parties”.

3. Vindicated by the European Court, Antoniadou died waiting for Turkey’s compensation

Another Cypriot applicant, who took recourse to the European Court of Human Rights for her property in the Turkish-occupied part of the island, passed away without being able to see the court’s judgment being implemented by Turkey.

4. Presidential elections to take place on 28 January and 4 February

Voting to elect Cyprus’ next President will take place next year, on 28 January and 4 February, according to a press release from the Press and Information Office.

The Arabic service, which the Cyprus News Agency introduced in September this year, is “an important tool” in promoting government foreign policy in the Arab world, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has said.

6. President feels proud about the work of the Karaiskakio Foundation

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades has expressed gratitude, emotion, and pride for the work carried out by the Karaiskakio Foundation and the volunteer donors, who with their efforts, sensitivity, and altruism have elevated Cyprus to a model country worldwide. Addressing a Karaiskakio Foundation event at the Presidential Palace on Thursday, during which the volunteer bone marrow donors were honoured, President Anastasiades also referred to the work of the scientists, who he said gave a huge added value to the voluntary service of the citizens.

7. State revenue from airports increases steadily, says Minister of Transport

Minister of Transport Marios Demetriades said on Thursday that there is a steady increase in state revenue from the operation of airports, while the managing company in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport is already planning ways to serve more passengers.

8. GDP in Cyprus grew by 0.9% and 3.5% in Q2 2017 in quarterly and annual basis

Seasonally adjusted GDP rose in Cyprus by 0.9% in the second quarter of 2017 compared to the first quarter and by 3.5% compared to the same quarter of 2016. In the first quarter of 2017, GDP grew by 1.0% and 3.7% respectively, according to an estimate published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

9. Deflation 0.2% in August

Inflation stood at -0.2% in August 2017 mainly due to the decline in prices of food and beverages, according to the Statistical Service of Cyprus.
