1. Cyprus President to probe possibility of new settlement initiative during UN General Assembly

The President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades said that he will probe the possibility over a new initiative for a Cyprus settlement during the UN General Assembly, next September in New York.
 Speaking on Tuesday morning in the village Prodromos, President Anastasiades noted that this is a period of reflection and said that he does not see any initiatives arising at the moment.

2. SG Envoy Eide leaves his post to pursue a political career in his country, UN announces

The Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide, has officially requested to be released from his responsibilities as the Special Adviser in order to run in the upcoming legislative elections in his country, Norway. According to a statement  attributable to the Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General Farhan Haq, the Secretary-General ``expresses his sincere gratitude to Mr. Eide for leading his good offices mission on the Cyprus issue in support of the bi-communal talks between the Greek-Cypriot leader, Nicos Anastasiades, and the Turkish-Cypriot leader, Mustafa Akıncı, in their efforts to reach a comprehensive settlement``

3. Firefighters from Cyprus stand ready to assist battling fires in Greece

A squad of sixty men with six vehicles is ready to rush to Greece and assist in battling with huge wildfires across the country. Minister of Justice Ionas Nicolaou told CNA that the team is ready and basically waiting for further instructions from Greece as to when it will be able to fly over and help out. Nicolaou said that he spoke on the phone with Deputy Minister of Public Order and Citizen Protection Nikos Toskas on Monday and he told him that Cyprus is ready to assist at any time.

4. President Anastasiades sends message of condolence to Egyptian President over recent train collision

The President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades sent on Monday a message of condolence to the President of Egypt Abdel Fattah Al Sisi over the recent train collision that claimed the lives of 41 people. In his message the President stated that it is with profound sorrow that he has received the sad news of the disastrous train collision in Alexandria on 11 August 2017.

5. Relatives of "Helios" air crash victims hold annual memorial service

Relatives of the "Helios" air crash  victims held on Monday the annual memorial service of their beloved ones, 12 years after the fatal accident, which cost the lives of all 121 people abroad. The memorial service took place at the mountain of Grammatikos, north of Athens, where the airplane crashed and a church was built in honour of the victims. Around 60 Greek Cypriot relatives went to Grammatikos for the memorial service. The government of Cyprus was  represented by Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Athens, Kyriakos Kenevezos. The memorial was also attended by Greek relatives of victims as well as by residents of the area.CNA
