1. Spokesman: Nami’s interview confirms the real reasons for the failure in Crans-Montana

Government Spokesperson Nikos Christodoulides said in a written statement  that the interview of Turkish Cypriot negotiator Ozdil Nami in Politis daily newspaper, confirms what the President of the Republic has said in relation to the real reasons that led to the failure of the Cyprus Conference in Crans-Montana.

2. Overseas Cypriots flock to Nicosia for 19th World Conference

The 19th World Conference of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK), the International Coordinating Committee - Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA) and the World Conference of Young Overseas Cypriots (NEPOMAK) is taking place in Nicosia, between August 21-24. According to a press relase, distributed by the PIO, the President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades will open the conference in the evening of August 21.

3. Moody’s: Cypriot Banks will benefit from increased loan demand

Moody’s rating agency says it expects the volume of new loans in 2017 to be the highest since 2013, pointing out that an increase while maintaining strong underwriting standards and best practices, will be credit positive for Cypriot banks. The rating agency cites the quarterly bank lending survey issued last Tuesday by the Central Bank of Cyprus which forecast increased loan demand in third-quarter 2017, mainly in mortgage and business loans, driven by accelerating economic growth, an improving labour market that increased business and consumer confidence and a gradual recovery of the property market, with building permits issued in first four months of 2017 reaching the highest level since the 2013 banking crisis.

4. HFC to implement new loan schemes in August and begin legal procedures for loan recovery

The Housing Finance Corporation (HFC) is set to implement before the end of August a new student loan scheme and a scheme for the purchase of building plot, taking advantage of recent amendments to its law, that expand its activities beyond the market of primary residence.  Furthermore, the HFC said that in September it will begin legal procedures to recover unpaid loans.

5. Forty students from Greece, Turkey and Cyprus attend peace workshop

Forty students, aged 15-18, from Greece, Turkey and the two communities in Cyprus participated in the 17th WINPEACE Worskhop on peace education, conflict resolution analysis, social entrepreneurship and communication skills that took place on July 22-29 at the Technical Educational Institute in Heraklion, Crete.

6. Larnaca set for best summer season in decades, according to the region’s tourism board

Larnaca is having this year its best summer season in decades in terms of tourist arrivals, following the success of 2016. According to the Larnaca Tourism Board, data from the Statistical Service show that this summer season is turning into “the best in decades” for the city and the District, with good occupancy levels across all hotels.CNA
