1. Turkey must undertake its responsibilities on the humanitarian issue of missing persons, Photiou says

Turkey bears great responsibility as regards the humanitarian issue of missing persons in Cyprus, Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou has said.In his speech on Sunday at a memorial service in for the people of Livadia, in Larnaca district, who went missing or were killed during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974,  Photiou said that Turkey continues in a provocative manner to refuse cooperation as regards the issue of missing persons and poses obstacles to investigations and exhumations in its military zones, in Cyprus` Turkish occupied areas.

2. Iranian officials reiterate their country`s principled position on the Cyprus problem

Iranian officials have reassured President of the House Demetris Syllouris of their country’s principled position on the Cyprus problem.Syllouris represented the Republic of Cyprus at the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s swearing in ceremony for a second term in office in Tehran, a House press release said on Sunday. The House of Representatives President had separate meetings with the country’s First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri, his Iranian counterpart Ali Ardeshir Larijani and Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

3. Government’s strategic choice is to strengthen rural communities, President says

Strengthening rural communities constitutes a strategic choice of the government, President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades has said.In his address on Saturday at the 5th annual event of the Sanida Community Council, in Limassol district, that was read out by Presidential Commissioner for Humanitarian and Overseas Affairs, Photis Photiou, the President said that "our strategic choice as a government is to strengthen rural communities and turn them into centres of agricultural, tourism, cultural and environmental development."

4. Discus throw athlete Parellis finishes 10th in IAAF World Championships

Cypriot athlete in discus throw Apostolos Parellis finished 10th at the London 2017 IAAF World Championships that take place on August 4-13. During the finals of the World Championships Men`s Discus Throw, which took place on Saturday, 32 year- old Parellis finished 10th with a throw of 63.17 metres. According to a press release, this is one of Parellis’ greatest successes which also include a 6th position in the World Championships in Beijing in 2015 and an 8th at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.CNA
