1. Eide appeals to Cypriots not to give up on the dream of a united Cyprus

UN Secretary General’s Special Advisor on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide has appealed to the people of Cyprus not to give up on the dream of a united federal Cyprus, adding that the work achieved during the past couple of years could be used as a platform to build on. He was speaking during a farewell reception on Thursday evening, attended by Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci. Speaking earlier on Thursday, after a farewell meeting with President Anastasiades, Eide said that the process for a Cyprus settlement can be resurrected, not by the UN but through an agreement by the sides.

2. UNSG`s spokesperson says UN remain available to parties in Cyprus

The UN and their good offices remain available to the parties in Cyprus, should the parties come back to the UN Secretary General, UNSG Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said on Thursday. He also noted that this is a time of reflection for the Cypriot parties. Dujarric said that Eide is wrapping up his tenure as a Special Advisor, but will continue working on the file from Oslo.

3. UN deny reports that Spehar spoke about a possible UNFICYP withdrawal

The UN have denied information published by media, according to which the UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Elizabeth Spehar has spoken about the possibility of withdrawing the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) from the island. Spehar met on August 2 with the Bi-communal Peace Initiative - United Cyprus and according to the Office of the UN Spokesperson in Cyprus "at no point during the meeting did she allude to the withdrawal of UNFICYP troops from the island”.

4. "ReThink" one of the biggest environmental awareness projects in Cyprus, Minister says

There have been remarkable changes in the perceptions of the public regarding waste management in the past few years, said Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Nicos Kouyialis. He was speaking on Thursday, at the final conference of the “ReThink” campaign, aiming to raise awareness and promote the reduction, reuse and recycling of waste.

5. Banks under-perform in 3 out of 4 indicators set by CBC on loan restructurings

Cypriot banks have fallen short in three out of four indicators, set by the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) on loan restructurings. According to a relevant press release, the CBC “has set targets for four indicators that were applied to the whole loan portfolio and to sub-portfolios”. There was an over-performance of the target for indicator 1, entitled “Proposed sustainable solutions”.

6. Deflation registered in July for the first time in 2017

Cyprus returned to deflation in July, for the first time since the beginning of the year, figures released by the Statistical Service showed on Thursday. Compared to July 2016, the CPI decreased by 0.7% while for the period January -July 2017, the CPI increased by 1% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.CNA
