1. President Anastasiades informs people on Crans-Montana outcome

The President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades will inform this afternoon the public about the outcome of the Conference on Cyprus in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. A press conference is scheduled for 8pm Cyprus time (5pm GMT), at the Presidential Palace and will start with an opening statement on behalf of the President. Subsequently, the President is expected to answer to journalists’ questions. Earlier in the morning, President Anastasiades informed the members of the National Council about developments in Crans-Montana.

2. Turkish positions in Switzerland don’t lead to a “normal state”, Cypriot MP tells COSAC

Cypriot MP Nicos Tornaritis briefed the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs of the Parliaments of the European Union (COSAC) over the latest developments in settlement talks, in Switzerland, noting that Turkish positions were in complete contrast to the notion of a “normal state”.

3. European population reaches 512 million on 1 January 2017

On 1 January 2017, the population of the European Union (EU) was estimated at 511.8 million, compared with 510.3 million on 1 January 2016. During 2016, as many births as deaths were recorded in the EU (5.1 million), meaning that the natural change of the EU population was neutral.

4. Cyprus trade deficit spikes to 1.65 billion in January – April of 2017

Cyprus trade deficit in the first four months of 2017 reached €1,656.7 million in January- April 2017 marking an increase of 125% compared to €735.6mn in the respective period of 2016. According to Cyprus’ Statistical Service, the rise is due to increasing imports and a reduction in exports.

5. Motor vehicle sales jump by 34% in the first half of 2017

Total motor vehicles registration jumped by 34.2% in the first half of 2017 reaching 22,157 compared with 16,506 in the respective period of 2016, the Cyprus Statistical Service said on Monday. The annual rise is mainly attributed to the increase in passenger cars sales.

6. The four Cypriot teams enter the battle of UEFA’ leagues

Four Cypriot teams in football, APOEL, Apollon, AEK and AEL get in the battle of UEFA leagues this week. Specifically, the Champions APOEL will face on Wednesday F91 DUDELANGE from Luxembourg in the framework of the second qualified round of the UEFA Champions League. The match will kick off at 20:00 in GSP Stadium in Nicosia.CNA
