1. President Anastasiades: Creative talks at Conference, no progress on internal aspects

President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades, described Thursday morning’s talks at the conference on Cyprus as creative. However, he said that no progress was achieved in the afternoon session on the internal aspects or procedure of the Cyprus problem. Meanwhile, he presented a 16-page document, in which he outlines in a well-documented manner his replies to the questions put forward by UN Under-Secretary General for political affairs Jeffrey Feltman during the opening session of the Conference.

2. UN SG chairs Cyprus Conference on Friday

A Conference on Cyprus which has been ongoing since Wednesday in Crans-Montana, Switzerland in the context of the UN led talks for the reunification of Cyprus, will be chaired on Friday by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. Sources told CNA that Guterres may stay overnight. Meanwhile, UN Spokesman Stephan Dujarric said Guterres feels it is important to attend the Conference.

3. Eide describes challenging connection of guarantees with outstanding issues

UN Special Adviser on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide described as challenging the connection of the security and guarantees issue to the issues that are outstanding. Diplomatic sources said the parties engaged in the Conference for Cyprus are exploring the issues at hand, even thorny issues.

4. Complication in Cyprus talks due to Turkey trying to promote the 4 freedoms, sources say

The complication that has come up in the Cyprus talks taking place at Crans Montana in Switzerland is due to the Turkish side’s insistence to promote the issue of the four freedoms, something which has prompted Maarten Verwey, Director General of the Structural Reform Support Service of the European Commission, to intervene. Meanwhile, the Greek side to the Conference on Cyprus is trying to open the discussion in such a way so that everyone will reveal their real intentions, Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Kotzias said on Thursday. Furthermore, the Turkish Cypriot side has asked for special treatment of Turkish nationals in Cyprus.

On 29 June, a Committee of Missing Persons excavation team located the remains of at least one individual in a military area in Deryneia/Derinya.

9. Economic sentiment down, industrial production and employees’ earnings up

In June, the Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) recorded a marked increase in the euro area by 1.9 points (to 111.1), and the EU by 1.6 points (to 111.3), reaching the highest levels since August 2007. The same index decreased in Cyprus form 116.1 points in May to 115.5 points in June. The Index of Industrial Production for April 2017 reached 81,1 units (base 2010=100), recording an increase of 1,0% compared to April 2016. The average monthly earnings of employees marked an increase in the first quarter of the year.CNA
