1. National Council convenes on Monday

The National Council convenes on Monday at 0900, under the presidency of Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades, who will inform the political leaders on developments in the Cyprus problem, in view of the Conference of Cyprus which will reconvene on June 28 in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. CNA has learned that the President will ask the political leaders to escort him at the Swiss resort, as they did in January when they accompanied him in Geneva, where the first session of the Conference on Cyprus took place.

2. Defence Minister to meet with his French counterpart in Paris

Defence Minister Christoforos Fokaides departs on Sunday for Paris, where he will have a meeting with the new Minister of Armed Forces of France, Sylvie Goulard. A press release issued by the Press and Information Office says that the two countries signed two months ago a new Defence Agreement, which expands and enhances the bilateral defence relations.

3. First Cyprus, Greece and Israel Trilateral Meeting on Health to take place on June 20 in Nicosia

The first Cyprus - Greece - Israel Trilateral Meeting on Health will take place in Nicosia on June 20, with the participation of the three countries` competent Ministers, George Pamporidis, Andreas Xanthos and Yakov Litzman. According to the programme of the meeting, released by the Presidency, the Ministers will have a meeting at 1200 with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades.

4. Return of Famagusta constitutes a priority its Mayor says

The return of the town of Famagusta to its lawful inhabitants should have been a priority to which maybe we should have insisted more, Famagusta Mayor Alexis Galanos told a seminar regarding the vision for the Turkish occupied town of Famagusta, held on Saturday in Nicosia.

5. Οne more Centre of Environmental Education will be created in Cyprus

Cyprus will acquire one more Centre of Environmental Education, that will be situated at Koilani village in Limassol district and which will be connected with all other public Centres of Environmental Education, as well as with public and private organisations, research centres and higher education institutions, President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades has said.

6. Cypriot MP to attend High Level Conference on migration management

Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Legal Affairs Demetris Demetriou will attend on Wednesday, in Brussels, a High Level Conference on migration management. According to a PIO press release, the Conference is organized by the European Parliament Committees on Development, on Security and Defence and on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs.

7. Nasser Al Attiyah leads Cyprus Rally

Qatar’s Nasser Al-Attiyah on board a Ford Fiesta R5 leads the Cyprus Rally amidst drama that saw the retirement of the European Rally Championship’s main contenders, Portugal’s Bruno Magalhaes and reigning ERC champion, Poland’s Kajetan Kajeranowicz. According to a press release issued by the Rally`s press office, they both retired in special stage six after an exit in exactly the same spot, along with Castrol Ford Team Turkiye’s Murat Bonstanci.

8. President Anastasiades calls on Turkey to be ready for action and not just words

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades called on Turkey on Friday to be ready for action and not just words at the forthcoming Conference on Cyprus that will take place in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, later in June.  Speaking during the inauguration of a biological Wastewater Treatment Plant in Athienou, President Anastasiades expressed the hope that during the talks in Switzerland, “we will be in a position to talk about a united country that has overcome the problems of occupation” and that Cyprus becomes a place for all its inhabitants who will be able to create freely and hope for a better future.

9. US Ambassador points to Turkey`s pivotal role on security and territory chapters

US Ambassador in Cyprus Kathleen Ann Doherty has said that obviously the chapters on security and guarantees and on territory will be very important at the negotiations on the Cyprus problem, adding that Turkey will have a pivotal role. Doherty noted that the two sides in Cyprus have shared with her "some elements of the agreement", adding that she is very impressed "with the enormous accomplishments the two sides have made. And I do believe there has been a foundation to create a very strong, sustainable, vibrant, robust federal Cyprus ", she added.

10. Conference on Cyprus will take place in Crans-Montana UN envoy announces

The Conference on Cyprus will take place in Crans-Montana, the UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide announced on Friday after a meeting he had with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades.  Eide said that both sides have confirmed to him that "they go there with the ambition to solve the problem." Meanwhile, Elizabeth Spehar, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Cyprus and Head of Mission, said on Friday that Australia departs from the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) at an important moment in Cyprus’ history, and expressed hope that the island would soon be reunified.

11. President Anastasiades heralds voting of National Health Plan bills

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades has described the passing of the bills for the much-awaited National Health Plan by Parliament on Friday of historic significance. In a statement to mark the event, President Anastasiades said that after decades of endless debates, one of the most decisive and radical reforms was achieved.

12. FM Kasoulides to visit Luxembourg, Hungary and Brussels

Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides will participate in the deliberations of the Foreign Affairs Council and the General Affairs Council of the European Union to be held on the 19 and 20 June in Luxembourg. An official statement said that the agenda of the FAC meeting includes an assessment of the implementation of the EU Global Strategy, terrorism and the EU-NATO partnership. Developments in Iraq and Qatar will also be examined.

13. Jurists discuss advantages of arbitration for commercial disputes

Senior jurists welcomed on Friday the establishment of a European Center for Arbitration and Mediation for Commercial Disputes in Cyprus, underlining its advantages over court litigation. Speaking during a meeting, in Nicosia, organized by the Rotary Club of Nicosia and Aspelia, the Attorney General of the Republic Costas Clerides said that the use of arbitration and mediation has been gaining ground in recent years.

14. Cyprus inflation shaply drops to 0.9% in May 2017 according to Eurostat

Cyprus inflation decreased to 0.9% in May 2017 from 2.1% in April 2017, according to a latest release from Eurostat. Euro area annual inflation was 1.4% in May 2017, down from 1.9% in April. In May 2016 the rate was -0.1%. European Union annual inflation was 1.6% in May 2017, down from 2.0% in April. A year earlier the rate was -0.1%. Meanwhile, hourly labour costs rose by 0.2% in Cyprus in Q1 2017 according to Eurostat. In the fourth quarter of 2016 hourly labour costs also increased by 1.2%.

15. Beer consumption increases significantly in May

Local consumption of beer in Cyprus showed a significant annual increase of 19.6% in May, according to figures released by the Statistical Service. The consumption of beer increased in the fifth month of the year to 4.427.384 litres, compared to 3.701.307 litres in May 2016.

16. Cyprus Rally gets underway

Cyprus Rally has got underway with 67 crews, as the shootout began on Saturday morning with eight special stage with a total length of 117,10 kilometers. According to a press release the first stage (21.66 kilometers) took place in Kalo Chorio, while the second was in Lefkara with a length of 18,48 kilometers.CNA
