1. Conference on Cyprus to take place in Crans-Montana, says Eide

The Conference on Cyprus will reconvene in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, Special Adviser of the UN Secretary General on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide has announced. Speaking on Friday after a meeting with the President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, Eide said that this is truly an historic opportunity. He added that both sides have confirmed that they go there with the ambition to solve the Cyprus problem. Yesterday, the President met in Thessaloniki with Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias, to coordinate action with Athens ahead of the Conference.

2. A Cyprus solution needs to be economically sustainable, President says

President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades stressed on Friday the need to reach an economically sustainable solution in Cyprus, highlighting the importance of securing the involvement of the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB) in development and rehabilitation efforts after a settlement. He also said he hoped for a “productive discourse without preconditions” in the upcoming Geneva Conference.

3. Leaders of Cyprus, Greece and Israel review trilateral cooperation

The Premiers of Greece and Israel and the President of Cyprus reviewed Thursday their trilateral cooperation, during a meeting in Thessaloniki, discussing in particular energy, economy, science and education, as well as developments in the Cyprus issue. Alexis Tsipras, Benjamin Netanyahu and Nicos Anastasiades also signed the Thessaloniki Declaration.

4. Moscow supports a comprehensive Cyprus settlement

Moscow stands for a comprehensive, fair and viable settlement in Cyprus in the interests of all its residents, said Maria Zakharova, Spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry. According to a message posted Thursday in the official twitter account of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Zakharova is quoted as saying that “Moscow is monitoring the intra-Cyprus settlement talks and welcomes their resumption in Geneva on June 28”.

5. House President condemns violation of refugees’ rights

The House of Representatives has condemned once more Turkey’s violation of the right of refugees to return to their homes. In a reference, on Friday, on the occasion of World Refugee Day – commemorated on June 20 – House President Demetris Syllouris spoke about the willingness of the Greek Cypriot side to “support the efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, in order to safeguard the peaceful coexistence of all Cypriots”.

6. ESM: Cyprus’ complete return to markets hinges on three conditions

Cyprus’ complete and successful return to the financial markets hinges upon the authorities’ determination to maintain prudent fiscal policy, bank restructuring and structural reforms, the European Stability Mechanism said on Thursday. Cyprus concluded in March 2016 its three-year financial assistance programme financed by the ESM and the IMF.

7. Human rights lawyer rolls out proposal to solve the property issue

Human rights lawyer Achilleas Demetriades presents a series of proposals to muster funds in the order of €20 bln, in an effort to tackle the property issue, one of the thorniest aspects of the Cyprus problem. Talking to CNA, the former member of the Technical Committee on Property says that “we need to clearly define the property issue in order to present a ‘turnkey solution’ to the problem”.

8. Cyprus records negative trade balance in the beginning of 2017

Cyprus` exports stood at 0.7 bln euro in the period from January to April 2017, dropping by -28%. Exports to the EU stood at 0.3 bln, declining by -55% and exports to the rest of the world amounted 0.4 bln increasing by 21%. At the same time, total imports stood at 2.4 bln euro, recording thus a negative trade balance of -1.6 bln.

9. Cypriot sailor Kontides ranks second in the ISAF World Laser Ranking

Cypriot sailor Pavlos Kontides and Olympic silver medalist ranks second in the World Laser Ranking with 931 points, according to ISAF. This is the best position which the 27-year-old has secured for the second time. The first time was 13 months ago.

10. Cyprus Rally 2017 starts on Friday

The Starting Ceremony of the Cyprus Rally 2017 takes place on Friday afternoon, with all cars and crews leaving the Starting Ramp at Foinikoudes, the beachfront in Larnaca at 19.00 local time, to return to the Service Park in the capital. The excitement begins on Saturday, when cars will face a total of 724 km with the fourteen special stages having a total length of 219.74.CNA
