1. President Anastasiades to brief party leaders ahead of meeting the UNSG and Akinci in NY

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades will be briefing the leaders of the parliamentary parties on Friday afternoon, ahead of his meeting in New York on Sunday with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci. Guterres has invited the two leaders to NY on Sunday evening to discuss the state of play in the UN-facilitated peace talks and the way forward.

2. Maronites in Cyprus hear the bells of restored Agia Marina Church ring once more

The restored Church of Agia Marina, located in the Turkish-occupied village of Agia Marina Skyllouras, in the Nicosia District, was handed over today to the Maronite Church, almost a year after the bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage started conservation works on site. A large crowd attended the completion ceremony on Thursday morning, and as the Maronite Archbishop of Cyprus Joseph Soueif entered the packed church, all started to sing with him a psalm in Aramaic.
3. Argonaut Exercise deals with scenario of serious maritime accident at open sea

Search and Rescue Operations Exercise Argonaut 2017 continued on Thursday and the scenario provided for a serious maritime accident at open sea on a passenger ship. Search and Rescue Operations (SAR) as well as medical evacuation operations were carried out, in order to locate and rescue people in distress. A press release circulated to the media by the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Larnaka says that ten Air SAR  and twelve Naval Units as well as personnel of the Republic of Cyprus as the Host Nation, Greece, France, Arabic Republic of Egypt, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America, participated in the SAR PHASE of the Exercise “ARGONAUT-2017”, under the operational control and coordination of the Joint Rescue Coordination Center .

4. Startups4Peace launched for the 3rd year

Startups4Peace, a competition and mini acceleration programme with mentoring support for start-ups, was launched on Thursday for the third consecutive year. The aim is to bring communities of Cyprus together and encourage them to create joint start-ups, facilitate collaboration between start-ups from all sides, and inspire and provide the knowledge and the means to build and grow new business ventures using expertise from Finland and Cyprus.
5. Pafos Aphrodite Festival to present Mozart`s opera Die Entführung aus dem Serail

The 19th Pafos Aphrodite Festival will present on September  1, 2 and 3, the Pafos Medieval Castle, W.A. Mozart’s opera Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The abduction from the Seraglio). According to a press release,  the 19th edition of Pafos Aphrodite Festival is included in the Programme of Events of Pafos 2017 European Capital of Culture "and opens its curtain with W.A. Mozart’s masterpiece Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio) on September 1, 2 and 3 at the square of the Pafos Medieval Castle in co-production with the Italian lyric organization Parma Opera Organization C.E.F.A.C. and the Theatre of Pisa with the participation of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra."CNA
