1. UNSG Spokesperson announces the leaders' meeting with Gutteres on Sunday

The Secretary-General invited on Wednesday Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci and Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades to New York for a joint meeting to discuss the Cyprus talks and the way forward, Stéphane Dujarric Spokesman for the SG said in a statement. Both leaders have accepted his invitation, Dujarric added.

2. Guterres pleased with Sunday’s dinner with the leaders, Spehar tells CNA

Elizabeth Spehar, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Cyprus, has said Antonio Guterres is pleased that the leaders of Cyprus’ two communities have accepted his invitation to meet at a dinner, in New York, on Sunday.  She expressed hope that discussions on Sunday could help move the Cyprus peace forward and perhaps reconvene a new conference on Cyprus in Geneva.

3. Eide tells CNA Turkey is ready to go to Geneva without any preconditions

Turkey is ready to go to Geneva for a Conference on Cyprus without any preconditions and is also ready to discuss security issues, UNSG’s Special Advisor for Cyprus Espen Barth Eide has told CNA. Eide, who held a meeting on Wednesday in Ankara with Ibrahim Kalin, Spokesman of the Turkish Presidency, described his meeting as constructive, and expressed confidence that Turkey and Greece are ready to discuss the security issues, relating to the Cyprus question.
4. Minister of Energy: Hydrocarbons could be an incentive for Turkey on the Cyprus issue

Minister of Energy Yiorgos Lakkotrypis said that discovery of hydrocarbons in Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone could be an incentive for Turkey to resolve the Cyprus issue, while reiterating that the government`s firm position is that the national problem is not related in any way to hydrocarbon designs and activities.

5. UN would not comment on remarks relating to Cyprus` hydrocarbons

UN Secretary General`s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said on Wednesday he would not comment on remarks made on the issue of hydrocarbons in Cyprus` Exclusive Economic Zone (EEEZ). He was invited to comment on Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades` statements that the UNSG`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide was out of line in speaking about hydrocarbons` exploration as a risk.

6. Cabinet decides allocation of 25% of its Co-operatives shares

The Council of Ministers decided on Wednesday to allocate free of charge 25% of the state shares in Co-operatives to depositors and consistent Co-operative borrowers. In statements after the Cabinet meeting, Minister of Finance Harris Georgiades said that 350,000 persons will benefit from this decision.

7. Annual inflation recorded at 1.1% in May

Annual inflation was recorded at 1.1% in May compared with the same month in the previous year, data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service, on Thursday, show. In May 2017, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) fell by 0.31 units to 99.70 units compared to 100.01 units in April 2017, a Statistical Service press release says. Compared to May 2016, CPI increased by 1.1% while for the period between January and May 2017, CPI also increased by 1.4% compared to the same period of the 2016

8. Unemployment in Cyprus down to 11.6% in April 2017

Seasonally- adjusted unemployment rate in Cyprus falls to 11.6% in April 2017, down from 12.3% in March and down from 12.9 in April 2016. This figure corresponds to 3000 less unemployed, (50 000 instead of 53 000 in March), out of which 10.5 male and 12.7 female. The euro area (EA19) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 9.3% in April 2017, down from 9.4% in March 2017 and down from 10.2% in April 2016. This is the lowest rate recorded in the euro area since March 2009. The EU28 unemployment rate was 7.8% in April 2017, down from 7.9% in March 2017 and from 8.7% in April 2016.

9. Eighteen countries participate in second phase of multinational exercise “Argonaftis 2017”

The second phase of the multinational exercise "Argonaftis 2017" took place on Wednesday.  The phase played out a scenario in which civilians had been evacuated from a neighbouring region in crisis and had been transferred to Cyprus.
10. Cyprus ranks 4th in the Games of the Small States of Europe

Cyprus ranks at the 4th place at the end of the second day of the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) that are taking place in San Marino. According the correspondent of EAK Arguyris Argyrou, Cyprus secured during the first two days 7 cold, 9 silver and 7 bronze medals.CNA
