1. International observers find fundamental flaws in Turkish referendum process

"The 16 April constitutional referendum in Turkey was contested on an unlevel playing field, and the two sides in the campaign did not have equal opportunities", OSCE ODIHR and the Council of Europe concluded in a statement released yesterday. According to the statement, "while the technical aspects of the process were well administered, voters were not provided with impartial information about key aspects of the reform, and limitations on fundamental freedoms had a negative effect".

2. Turkey`s EU membership is off the table, Manfred Weber says

Manfred Weber, Chairman of EPP-Group in the European Parliament and Deputy President of Bavarian CSU Party said yesterday that Turkey deviates from rule of law and democracy and clarifies that Turkey`s EU membership is now off the table. The leader of the largest political family in the EP said: "with his referendum Turkish President Erdogan is leaving the nation profoundly split. What is clear is that the Turkish leadership has opted for a course away from the rule of law and from democracy. Apparently, this is supported by a small majority of Turkish citizens. We must respect that."

3. Annual tourist arrivals up by 2.8% in March

Annual tourist arrivals in Cyprus recorded an increase of 2.8% in March this year compared with March 2016, while for the first quarter an increase of 13.5% has been recorded compared with the first three months of last year, data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service show. At the same time, more Cypriot residents travelled abroad, with returning residents recording an annual increase in March 2017 of 19.2%

4. Construction materials price index records increase in March

The construction materials price index recorded an increase this March both on an annual and monthly basis, according to data released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus. The price index reached 101.07 units this March (base year 2010=100.00), recording an increase of 0.19% compared to February 2017 and 1.08% compared to March 2016.

5. Cypriot sailor wins gold in Split Olympic Sailing Week

Cypriot sailor and silver Olympic medalist Pavlos Kontides (London 2012) has won the gold medal in the Split Olympic Sailing Event, in Croatia. Croatians Filip Jurišić and Tonči Stipanović got second and third place respectively. Stipanović holds an Olympic silver medal (Rio 2016).He travels to Hyères, France at the end of this week where he competes is the next World Cup set to take place between April 25 and 30, a press release says.

6. Maria Zoupaniotis a true professional, UN Spokesman says

UN Spokesman Stephan Dujarric has said a few words about Maria Zoupaniotis, who passed away last Thursday, noting that she was "a true professional and someone who passionately loved her country." Dujarric, who was addressing a daily briefing yesterday, at UN headquarters, in New York, said that "for almost 30 years, Maria Zoupaniotis was the press counsellor at the Mission of the Republic of Cyprus." I think, he added, "if we kept track of these things, she would have been the dean of the spokespeople at the Missions."CNA
