1. Cyprus cannot be reunified through threats and blackmail, President says

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has said that Cyprus cannot be reunified through the use of threats or blackmail, adding that it must be understood by all that “we respect any concerns each citizen may have and I hope that the same goes for the other side.” “It is not conceivable that instead of serving (the interests of) the Cypriot people a solution would serve third parties,” President Anastasiades said.

2. The role of the UN is to be helpful, says Eide

The role of the UN is to be helpful, said today the Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide, while reiterating that the settlement process is leaders` led and Cypriot-owned "and it can be nothing but that". I am doing my best to assist both leaders, but I am very loyal to this principle, he added. Eide made these statements on Wednesday, after meeting with the President of the "Citizens` Alliance" party, Giorgos Lililikas.

3. Cyprus stopped at least 18 potential terrorists` travelling to Syria, Zenon tells CNA

Cyprus has a very close and effective cooperation with security and intelligence services of countries in its neighbourhood and beyond that, Foreign Ministry Permanent Secretary Alexandros Zenon had told CNA, adding that the country has sent back to their countries of origin at least 18 so-called foreign fighters who had arrived to the island in the past, in order to pass to the Turkish occupied areas, from there to Turkey and then to Syria, to join the Islamic State fighters there.

4. Cyprus Defence Minister meets Egyptian President

Cyprus Minister of Defence Chistoforos Fokaides who carries out an official visits to Cairo, held Wednesday separate meetings with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi and his Egyptian counterpart Sedki Sobhi. According to a Public Information Office, during the meeting with Al Sisi, Fokaides conveyed Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades` and the Cypriot government`s sincere condolences for the victims of the recent terrorist attacks against the country`s Christian citizens.

5. Cyprus` reunification will be "a message of good hope" says EPP Vice President

A reunified Cyprus will be a message of good hope in these challenging times, said EPP Vice President David MacAllister, who is also the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament. MacAllister, who is paying a visit to Cyprus, met here this afternoon with Averof Neophytou, the President of the Democratic Rally party. "I am here to listen and to learn," said the German MEP in statements after the meeting.

6. Cyprus to sign OECD Multilateral Instrument setting minimum standards on Double Tax Treaties

Cyprus announced its intention to sign the ‘Multilateral Convention to Implement Tax Treaty related measures to Prevent Base Erosion and Profit Shifting’ (Multilateral Instrument) of the OECD. According to a press release issued by the Finance Ministry, the signing of the “Multilateral Instrument” has been approved by the Council of Ministers on April 5. The signing is scheduled to take place in Paris on June 7.

7. Business investment rate up to 23.5% in the euroarea, household saving rate at 12% in Q4 0216

In the fourth quarter of 2016, the business investment rate was 23.5% in the euro area, compared with 22.0% in the previous quarter. The business profit share in the euro area was 41.0% in the fourth quarter of 2016, compared with 40.7% in the third quarter of 2016. Meanwhile the household saving rate in the euro area was 12.0% in the fourth quarter of 2016, compared with 12.3% in the third quarter of 2016.

8. Two girls from Cyprus and Turkey jointly won the European Championship in U14 Double

Two 14 year old girls, Maria Constantinou from Cyprus and Semra Aksu from Turkey jointly won the Kalovelonis 2017 Tennis European Championship that took place in Athens on 3-9 April, 2017. The two girls secured the first place in the category of Double U14. The two girls registered together as a couple for the tournament in U14 at the last minute and they first met at the courts of Kalavelonis Academy in Athens.CNA
