1. Eide: Leaders need the support of the broader community

The intercommunal climate is not optimal right now, UNSG`s Special Advisor for Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide, has said, after being received on Wednesday by President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, with whom he discussed about the Cyprus leaders` meeting on Thursday.

2. Putin conveys personal message to Anastasiades expressing the will to enhance trade cooperation

President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin has sent a message to Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades stressing his country`s will for further enhancing mutually beneficial trade and economic cooperation between the two countries. The message was conveyed by the President of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Lebedev, who is paying a visit to Cyprus with members of the Court, and was received on Tuesday by President Anastasiades.

3. Turkey`s contribution necessary to solve issue of missing persons, says Presidential Commissioner

The issue of missing persons will not be resolved without Turkey`s effective contribution and cooperation, Presidential Commissioner for Humanitarian Issues Fotis Fotiou said on Tuesday, during a meeting in Nicosia with French Ambassador Rene Troccaz.

4. Our bad self the main risk of economic recovery, Finance Minister warns

The biggest main risk to satisfactory but sustainable growth rates is “our bad self”, said Finance Minister Harris Georgiades on Tuesday, invited to comment on the preliminary estimate of the Statistical Service for a growth rate of 2.8% for the last quarter of 2016 and the previous year as a whole.

5. Russian Supreme Court President wraps up visit to Cyprus

President of Russia`s Supreme Court Vyacheslav M. Lebedev paid a visit to Cyprus, accompanied by the two Presidents of Russia`s Regional Courts. According to an official press release issued here, the Russian delegation had on Tuesday a meeting with the President and the members of the Supreme Court of Cyprus.

6. “Alasia” vessel officially handed over to Cyprus by Oman

The vessel “Alasia” gifted to the Republic of Cyprus by the Sultan of Oman was officially handed over to the Cypriot navy in a ceremony in Larnaka harbour. The vessel, which has been fully repaired, will patrol the open seas, will take part in search & rescue operations, humanitarian assistance missions and will also be used as a training vessel for the Cypriot navy.

7. Positive trend in tourism to continue in 2017, Minister says

The Ministry of Tourism estimates that the positive trend in tourist arrivals and revenue from tourism will continue in 2017, Minister Yiorgos Lakkotrypis, addressing the 39th annual conference of the Hoteliers` Association, said on Tuesday, noting that the new national strategy of Cyprus for tourism is about to be concluded, aiming primarily at a modern tourist product.

8. Council of Europe Committees to convene in Cyprus

Two Committees of the Council of Europe will hold separate meetings in Cyprus in the framework of Cyprus` Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of CoE. The Committee of Experts on the Administrative Detention of Migrants will convene to discuss the minimum standards for detention conditions for irregular immigrants under deportation while the Drafting Group on Migration and Human Rights will discuss the alternatives of detention with common goal the respect of human rights.

9. Cypriot economy grows by 2,8% in 2016, GDP growth at 0.5% in Cyprus

The Cypriot economy grew by 2.8% in 2016, according to a flash estimate the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat) issued on Tuesday. According to Cystat, the GDP growth rate in real terms during the fourth quarter of 2016 is estimated at 3.0% over the corresponding quarter of 2015. Meanwhile, Seasonally adjusted GDP rose by 0.5% in Cyprus, by 0.4% in the euro area (EA19) and by 0.5% in the EU28 during the fourth quarter of 2016, compared with the previous quarter, according to a flash estimate published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In the third quarter of 2016, GDP grew by 0,8%, 0.4% and 0.5% respectively.

10. Eurostat: Industrial production rises by 3.4% in annual basis for November 2016

In December 2016 compared with November 2016, seasonally adjusted industrial production fell by 1.6% in the euro area (EA19) and by 1.0% in the EU28, according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.CNA
