Cyprus Delegation In Brussels Begin Meetings Regarding EU Presidency

The President of the Republic Mr Demetris Christofias

The President of the Republic Mr Demetris Christofias, who arrived last night in Brussels heading a delegation of members of the Council of Ministers, begins this morning his contacts, in view of the assumption of the Presidency of the Council of the EU by Cyprus in the second semester of 2012.

The delegation, accompanying President Christofias, comprises the Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis, the Acting Minister of Finance, Minister of Communications and Works Mr Efthymios Flourentzou, the Minister of Interior Mr Neoklis Sylikiotis, the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Mrs Praxoula Antoniadou, the Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Mr Sophoclis Aletraris, the Minister of and Labour and Social Insurance Mrs Sotiroula Charalambous, the Government Spokesman Mr Stefanos Stefanou and the Deputy Minister for European Affairs Mr Andreas Mavroyiannis.

The President of the Republic will visit this morning the offices of the Permanent Representation of the Republic and then he will have a private meeting with the President of the European Commission Mr Jose Emanuel Barroso, at the European Commission.

Afterwards, President Christofias and the Ministers accompanying him will attend a joint meeting with the plenary of the College of Commissioners. During his speech at the plenary, the President of the Republic is expected to speak, inter alia, on issues that are related to the economic policy with emphasis on the corrective changes that need to be done in relation to the distribution and redistribution of wealth.

The President of the Republic and the Ministerial delegation will then have working lunch with the members of the College of Commissioners. During the lunch, President Christofias will speak on the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency of the EU.

Later, President Christofias and Mr Barroso will give a joint press conference.

In the afternoon, President Christofias will receive Commissioner Mrs Androulla Vasiliou and members of her office and then he will have a meeting with the staff of the Permanent Representation of the Republic in Brussels.

On the sidelines of the President‘s meetings, the members of the Council of Ministers accompanying him will hold bilateral meetings with the College’s Commissioners and will make interventions on issues within their competencies both during the plenary of the College of Commissioners as well as during the working lunch.PIO
