Importing Vehicles to Cyprus

Import of Vehicles

Private Motor Vehicles
According to the existing Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic legislation, a private motor vehicle can be registered in Cyprus provided its age prior to its importation is less than five years old, this counted from the date the vehicle was registered as new in any country or, if the vehicle was not registered, from the date this was bought for the first time as new.

As an exemption to the above, an overage vehicle (more than five years old) can be registered in Cyprus, PROVIDED it is imported by a person having a permanent residence abroad and is coming to Cyprus to reside.

Notes:
(a) a person may exercise the right to import and register an overage vehicle only ONCE.
(b) the use of the overage vehicle after registration in Cyprus is restricted to the owner and his/her dependants, and
(c) transfer of ownership of the vehicle is only permitted after three years from its registration in Cyprus.
(d) The vehicle should be of a right hand drive steering system. A left hand drive vehicle may be registered if it is imported by a repatriated person provided that:
I. he is in possession of the vehicle for more than two years prior to his arrival to the island,
II. he is a permanent resident of a foreign country for more than two years prior to his arrival to the island and
III. the conversion of the steering system from LHD to RHD is uneconomical, that is the conversion cost is more than 50% of the customs estimated value of the vehicle.

A vehicle can also be registered with a left hand steering system if imported by a diplomat, British Army or United Nations staff. When a left hand drive vehicle is registered in Cyprus it cannot be transferred to a non-entitled person, unless its steering system is converted to right hand, or unless an approval is granted by the Registrar of Motor Vehicles.

Other motor vehicles
As regards importation and registration of other types of vehicles, the above mentioned legislation provides that:
(i) a light or heavy goods vehicle may be registered in Cyprus provided its age prior to its importation is less than four years old, this counted from the date the vehicle was registered as new in any country or, if the vehicle was not registered, from the date this was bought for the first time as new.
(ii) an o/bus may be registered in Cyprus provided its age prior to its importation is less than three years old, this counted from the date the vehicle was registered as new in any country or, if the vehicle was not registered, from the date this was bought for the first time as new.

Registration fee
A registration fee is payable on registering a car in Cyprus and a road tax is payable annually or for a six months period. Both charges vary according to the vehicle΄s weight and type of fuel consumed (petrol or diesel).
