The village is built high up on the banks of the Xeros river, and gives the village excellent views of the Xeros river valley. This was important, as the villagers were able to see any advanced attackers from a distance, and so had time to prepare their defences.

Nata village suffered a series of earthquakes in 1953 and a large part of the village was destroyed. The destruction made the villages extend the village and built new homes further up the banks of the Xeros river. The old houses were abandoned and are now ruins, with many of the walls collapsing. The earthquakes also meant many of the villagers left, seeking work elsewhere in Cyprus and abroad.

The village has a current population of around 350 people and this figure is increasing due to the large number of Cypriots returning from abroad and also the interest shown from overseas citizens, who have chosen to make Nata village their new home.

The Xeros river usually supplies the valley and village with ample water in the winter, and the valley turns into a lush green landscape, much like farmland in northern Europe.
