The village has retained it's traditional charm with the many old houses still in abundance. The small narrow streets are a joy to wander around in and is a photographers paradise. The village is also home to artists.

There are two historic churches in Alona, Panagia Kardakiotissa and Agios Georgios. The saint Agios Georgios is celebrated with a festival in the village in November each year.

Alona is also famous for it's Zivania, the local spirit, and the village holds a Zivania Festival each year. Visitors are encouraged to sample the locally produced Zivania and are able to learn how it is made, still using the old traditional methods.
