A few useful tips for Cyprus Expats on how to ensure your home is protected whilst you are away on holiday

Cyprus Village House - Agios Georgios

Insurance. If you are planning a lengthy spell away from your home, check your home insurance. Your insurance company may ask for special conditions to be met, or an additional premium.

Post. Your post lying on your doorstep, because your letterbox is full, is a dead giveaway that you are away. Those free newspapers and advertising folders also do not help. Arrange for somebody to empty your letterbox frequently for you.

Still at home? Give the impression that you have not gone away. Blinds are a a better option for windows, as you do not have to draw the curtains, or leave them open, a difficult choice. Lighting on a timer is a good option too, but try not to set the timer for the same time every day. Give your garden a good make over, get neat and tidy, so it does not look too overgrown in your absence.

Valuables. Valuable documents, jewellery and external hard discs, should be locked away in a safe built into your home, or your bank may have safety deposit boxes available. Expensive mobile telephones, laptops, computer accessories and other "must have "expensive articles, should be locked away out of sight, in a safe place. Valuable articles kept in your shed, should be brought in to your house.

Car. Car keys should be well hidden from view, as electronic keys make stealing your car very easy, just point it out the window, and it lights up.

Being helpful. It is bad enough to be burgled, but why help the intruders? Tools, ladders and other helpful things to help them, should be made unavailable.

Don't broadcast that you are going away! If you have regular deliveries, or visitors, cancel these discreetly. Difficult times as these, can lead to envy, so it doesn't help if you broadcast that you are going away for a lengthy spell in a nice place.

Neighbours. Everybody's wish, nice friendly neighbours. If you have them, ask if they can keep an eye on your home. They can collect the post, draw and close curtains, turn lights on and off, organise the rubbish containers, and even park in your drive and garage. Using your car is a sign that you are still at home, as it is not always standing still. You can always repay the favour, you scratch my back and i will scratch your back.
