Information on the types of Cyprus pre- primary education

Public, communal and private Pre-Primary schools function in Cyprus.

Public Pre-Primary schools

The public Pre-Primary schools are graded as follows:

Schools with one Pre-Primary teacher: One-teacher schools

Schools with two Pre-Primary teachers: Two-teacher schools

Schools with three or more Pre-Primary teachers: Many-teacher schools

There are four Pre-Primary schools in Cyprus which function with morning and afternoon attendance. As from September 2004, free compulsory Pre-Primary education one year before the child’s admission to the primary school was introduced. The Ministry of Education and Culture undertakes all the expenses of the public Pre-Primary schools (salaries of teaching and other staff, educational equipment, building expenses, cleaning expenses, stationery, electricity, heating and other). Moreover, the Ministry of Education and Culture is responsible for the assessment and continuous training of the staff on current educational approaches.

Communal Pre-Primary schools

The communal Pre-Primary schools function together with the public Pre-Primary schools most of the times with the same address and the same Parents’ Association and cater mainly for children aged 3 - 4 8/12 years. The communal Pre-Primary schools are founded by local authorities, Parents’ Associations, Societies based on the Primary Schools Law of 1971 until 2008, but function based on the regulations and the programme of the public Pre-Primary schools. Moreover, their functioning is regulated by the circulars which are sent by the Ministry of Education and Culture.

The government finances their functioning and the Parents’ Association undertakes the employment of educational and other staff, the finding of premises and the current functioning expenses. The children pay fees. There are communal Pre-Primary schools which function both with morning and with afternoon attendance or extended attendance until 2:45 p.m.

Private Pre-Primary schools

Private Pre-Primary schools are founded and conditioned by the Law related to Private Schools of 1971 until 2008 and are distinguished into three types: same type, similar type and different type. Private Pre-Primary schools function, basically, as private speculative educational institutions. They are regulated and guided by officers of the Ministry of Education and Culture. Private Pre-Primary schools may function with morning as well as with afternoon attendance.
