Information on the various UK sickness insurance support you may need when Moving To The UK
Access to health care through the National Health Service (NHS) is free to all people who are working or looking for work, or who are normally resident in the UK. Some services must be paid for including dental treatment and prescriptions.
European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
If you are from the EEA or Switzerland and are planning a short trip to UK, you must bring this with you, which you must obtain from your home country. The EHIC entitles you to free NHS treatment.
Statutory Sick Pay (SSP)
If you are employed and unable to work due to illness for at least four days in a row, you may be entitled to statutory sick pay (SSP). SSP can be paid for up to 28 weeks and you may be eligible if your gross earnings are more than £97 per week. The standard rate is £79.15 per week.
Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
Employment and Support Allowance replaced Incapacity Benefit and Income Support for new customers from 27 October 2008. If you are already claiming Incapacity Benefit, you will continue to receive it for as long as you remain eligible. With Employment and Support Allowance, if you have an illness or disability which severely affects your ability to work, you will get financial support. You will receive a Work Capability Assessment to assess what you can do and identify the support you need. To claim you must have an illness or disability which affects your ability to work and you are either off work or out of work, self employed, can’t get Statutory Sick Pay, or your Statutory Sick Pay has stopped. If you are coming from abroad and have paid enough National Insurance contributions in the past (or equivalent in certain other countries), then you may be able to claim ESA. You can claim online, by contacting your nearest Jobcentre Plus office or by downloading the claim form.
