A brief summary of the various means of Transport to expect when Moving To The UK

Although towns and cities in Britain seem close to each other, travelling around by public transport can be difficult and you may need to plan your journey carefully. Fares are often expensive compared with other countries. Generally people use buses and trams, or the Underground, for short journeys within a town or city. For longer journeys the train may be faster but coaches are usually cheaper.

Many different private companies operate the UK Rail network. You can buy a ticket for travel at the station, over the phone or on-line. This will be valid on all companies’ trains (except special offer tickets) for the route you are travelling on. To check train times, book tickets or for any other queries you can visit the national rail website or telephone National Rail Enquiries on 08457 484950.

There are many taxis available in big cities; alternatively you can phone a local private taxi to pick you up from an agreed place or to book a journey. Taxis often have a standard charge on the meter for any journey. Make sure you only use licensed taxis. By law, licensed taxi drivers have to display their photographic identification card in their vehicle.
