A brief summary for Expats of what to expect in your private life regarding Birth, Marriage and Death when Moving To The UK

Births
Registering a birth is a legal requirement and is necessary to claim child benefit and to register a baby with a doctor. The procedure for registering a birth depends on where in the UK the birth took place.

In England and Wales the birth must be registered within 42 days at the hospital or local registry office. Babies born in Scotland must be registered within 21 days, and Scottish law allows a birth to be registered in any registration district in Scotland. Babies born in Northern Ireland must be registered within 42 days either at the maternity hospital or at the registry office in the district where the mother lives. Following the registration of the birth, a short birth certificate will be issued.

Marriages
In England and Wales a marriage can take place at a registry office, a building approved for civil marriage, in an Anglican church or other religious building registered for marriage. In Northern Ireland, civil ceremonies must take place at the Registrar’s office. You must be 16 years old to marry in the UK. It is a legal requirement to give notice of a marriage and a marriage cannot take place until at least 15 clear days after this date.

Civil Partnerships
A civil partnership enables a same-sex couple to register as each others partner. This can be done in a registry office or at approved premises, and requires both partners to be at least 16. A notice period of at least 15 days is also required.

Deaths
Deaths in England and Wales should be registered within 5 days of the death. The medical certificate of cause of death must be taken to the registry office. Sometimes the coroner needs to be involved, which may delay the registration of the death. In Scotland, a death must be registered within 8 days and the law allows a death to be registered in any registration district in Scotland. Deaths in Northern Ireland must be registered within 5 days. After registering a death, a death certificate is issued.
