The United Kingdom is a culturally diverse place, where distinct traditions and identities can be found in each of its constituent nations (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland). The country has been culturally enriched by centuries of inward migration, which has helped to create a tolerant society. People coming to the UK are expected to respect the opinions and cultural backgrounds of others, no matter how different they are to their own.

Popular leisure activities include walking, sightseeing and visiting museums, many of which are free to enter. Joining a sports club or social club is a good way of meeting people. Charitable organisations, religious groups and volunteer groups also organise activities in the local community, such as ‘village fêtes’ in the summer.

The UK has a busy sporting calendar with major events taking place throughout the year. Football, Rugby, Cricket, Golf and tennis are all popular spectator sports. Football and Fishing are the most popular participation sports. Whatever your tastes, you will have the opportunity to watch or take part in a wide range of sporting activities.

Going to a public house (pub) is a popular social activity. Most sell meals as well as serving drinks. The local pub is often at the heart of a community and is a good place to socialise. Football and cricket matches are often televised and many pubs organise a general knowledge ‘pub quiz’ once a week.

Popular forms of evening entertainment include simply ‘staying in’ to watch television; going out for a meal; visiting the cinema or theatre; or going to see a concert.
