Cyprus Army - Cyprus Army Service

Information for Cyprus Expats and male citizens of paternal Cypriot descent regarding Cyprus National Service obligations

It is extremely important for male visitors with parents of Cypriot origin to confirm their status as to completing Cyprus Army Conscription obligations.When you leave Cyprus, your documentation will be scrutinised at your departure point, and if you do not have the correct documentation, such as an Exit Visa, then you may be detained and not allowed to travel.

Cyprus National Service is compulsory for all males in Cyprus and the current length of term is 24 months, although this is being reviewed. Expaect to be called on the 1st of January after you have reached your 18th birthday. Males under 50 can expect to be drafted, and complete some conscription time.

Returning Cypriots

If you have lived abroad for a number of years, you will qualify for a reduced term of conscription, depending on age, see guide below:

3 months service if you are over 26

6 months if you between 18 - 26

12 months if you are between 13 and 18 when you come of age

18 months if you are between 10 and 13 when you come of age

If you were born outside Cyprus of Cypriot descent and return to Cyprus, you are still obligated to serve in the Cyprus National Service even though you may have a non Cypriot passport.

Exit Visa - Exemption For National Service

If you visit Cyprus regularly, stay less than 3 months at a time, and have been excluded from serving in the Cyprus military due to your overseas residence, you are allowed to travel at will with no further documentation required. This exemption must be produced at transit points if requested.

If you stay longer than 3 months, then you will require an Exit Visa or Certificate of Exeption issued by the Cyprus Ministry of Defence.
