Information for Cyprus Expats on the Educational System of Cyprus

Pre Primary Education

The Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture is responsible for the education of children who have reached the age of 3 years and over. This is the authority that oversees all nursery schools in Cyprus.

There is a free of charge compulsory Pre Primary Education programme for children attending one year before admission in a Primary school. The 3 types of nursery school that operate in Cyprus are Public, Community and Private.

The Ministry of Education and Culture will be resposible for all the operating costs of Public Nursery Schools.

Primary Schools

When a child has reached the age of 5 years and 8 months, it is subject to compulsory Primary School Education. Education at Public Primary Schools is free. Most Towns and Villages have a Primary School where there are 15 or more children of Primary School age.

Primary Schools in large urban and rural communities are divided into 2 cycles.

Cycle A  - For 1st to 3rd grades

Cycle B - For 4th to 6th grades

Classes and teachers are arranged in such a way, as to try and not to exceed 30 pupils per class.

Registration for children at a Public Nursery School usually takes place in the second week of January. To register a child that was born in Cyprus, a valid Birth Certficate must be produced. A child that was born outside Cyprus, must produce a document or passport, that states the date of birth of the child. Photocopies of these documents are only allowed by if certified by a competent officer. It is recommended that certified translations, in Greek or English are accompanied with these documents.

Education for Children with Special Needs

The state is responsible for providing education for children with special needs. Education begins at 3 years of age and continues till 18 years. If the child continues onto higher education, this is extended till 21 years if necessary.

All Day Schools

These schools function on a voluntary basis. The government is resposible for the schools, with meal arrangements being the resposibilty of the parents.

There are a few schools for grades 1,2,and 3 while the majority of schools are for grades 4,5 and 6

The class size can vary from between 8 to 25 pupils, depending on the needs of each school.

Optional subjects include Information Technology, Music, Art, Design, English and Physical Education.

Public Secondary General Education

Pupils aged between 12 and 18 are placed into 2 cycles of education, each of three years each. These are called the Gymnasio and the Lykeio.

Public school education in the Gymnasio and the Lykeio is free of charge and is compulsory till the age of 15 for the Gymnasio.

The Gymnasio continues the education of pupils from Primary schools and prepares them for the Lykeio.

The Gymnasio exams are in June, and a pupil that has completed the grades 1,2 and 3, will be granted a leaving certificate, which will be needed to continue education in the .Lykeio.

The first grade Eniaio Lykeio subjects are core subjects, and the second and third grade students will also study core subjects, but will also be able to choose other subjects too.

Secondary Technical and Vocational Education (STVE)

Once the Gymnasio education has been completed and the relevant leaving certificate has been obtained, then students may continue their education by attending a Secondary Technical and Vocational Education (STVE).

The study period is 3 years for the Theoretical and the Practical subjects. Once a pupil has succesfully graduated, they will be presented with a leaving certificate. This will enable them to continue their education in a Cyprus Higher and Tertiary Education Institute. Pupils will have to take the Pancyprian Examinations first.
