Information for Cyprus Expats on the rules concerning taking your cat or dog from Cyprus to the UK using the UK Pet Travel Scheme (PETS)

You live in Cyprus, and you would like to return or visit the UK, and you would like to take your cat or dog with you. There are strict rules you must follow, and you need to plan ahead. Allowing around 8 months will provide you with ample time to make arrangements.

Not more than 5 pets may travel into the UK at the same time.

The UK does not allow dogs, cats or ferrets to be imported into the country without a rabies vaccination. On the vaccine manufacturers datasheet, the minimum age of the pet will be listed, then the strict preparation work may begin.

The procedures for your pet to have their PETS passport is as follows:

Your pet must be fitted with a microchip. This can be fitted at any time, but it must be carried out before it is vaccinated against rabies and blood tested.

Once your pet has been fitted with the microchip, then it will have to be vaccinated against rabies. There are no exceptions to this rule.

The next step is to arrange for your pet to have a blood test. This is to ensure that the vaccine is working and giving your pet protection against rabies.

Once these procedures have been carried out, you will have to arrange the PETS passport. A local registered vet in Cyprus can supply you with the passport. The passport will be valid for entry and re - entry to the UK 6 months from the date the test blood sample gave a satisfactory result. keep a note of the re - entry date, as this will not be shown on the PETS passport.

The passport will be valid provided your pet is vaccinated again by the "valid until" date in section IV in the passport.

Your pet must be treated for taperworms and ticks before entry will be allowed into the UK. This must be done not less than 24 hours and not more than 48 hours before being checked in.

Your pet must travel on an authorised route and an approved transport company. A list of approved transport companies may be found below:
