The Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL)
The Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL) (Greek: Ανορθωτικό Κόμμα Εργαζόμενου Λαού)is a communist party in Cyprus. It supports an independent, demilitarised and non-aligned Cyprus, and a federal solution of the internal aspect of the Cyprus problem.
It was founded in 1926 with the name Communist Party of Cyprus (KKK).
Until recently, it was led by Demetris Christofias, the current President of the Republic. Elections within the party, held on 21 January 2009, have brought Andros Kyprianou to the leadership.
In the elections of 21 May 2006, the party won 31.16% and 18 out of 56 seats.
It is a member of the European United Left - Nordic Green Left in the European Parliament.
In the last European Elections, in June 2004 AKEL elected two members of the European Parliament.
Democratic Rally Party
The Democratic Rally (Greek: Δημοκρατικός Συναγερμός), or DISY, is a centre-right political party in Cyprus, led by Nicos Anastasiades.
The party was founded on the 4th of July 1976 by veteran politician Glafkos Clerides. Clerides served as Cyprus president from 1993 until 2003.
DISY is a member of the European People's Party (EPP).
In the elections of 21 May 2006, the party won 30.3 % and 18 out of 56 seats.
In the 2004 European Parliamentary Elections it gained 28.2%, and elected two members of the European Parliament.
Democratic Party
The Democratic Party (Greek: Δημοκρατικό Κόμμα) is a centrist political party in Cyprus, founded in 1976 by Spyros Kyprianou. It is currently led by Marios Garoyian. It was the third-largest party in Parliament, with 9 of 56 seats. In the elections of 21 May 2006, the party won 17.9% and 11 out of 56 seats.
In the 2004 European Parliamentary Elections it elected one member of the European Parliament.
European Party
The European Party (Greek: Ευρωπαϊκό Κόμμα) is a political party in Cyprus founded in 2005, largely out of the New Horizons party. It is a member of the European Democratic Party. In the elections of 21 May 2006, the party won 5.8 % and 3 out of 56 seats.
Ecological and Environmental Movement
The Ecological and Environmental Movement, also known as Cyprus Green Party (Greek: Κίνημα Οικολόγων Περιβαλλοντιστών) is an ecologist political party in Cyprus. In the elections of 21 May 2006, the party won 2.0 % and 1 out of 56 seats.
The Movement for Social Democracy
The Movement for Social Democracy (Greek: Κίνημα Σοσιαλδημοκρατών) is a social-democratic political party in Cyprus. It is led by Yannakis Omirou.
In the elections of 21 May 2006, the party won 8.9 % and 5 out of 56 seats. It is a member of the Party of European Socialists.
