Information for Cyprus Expats on Cyprus Private Life ( Birth, Marriage and Death)

Women go to state and private hospitals and private clinics to give birth. Births must be registered at the office of the eparch of the city in which occur. All district administrations issue birth certificates.
Both civil and religious weddings are conducted in Cyprus. The law prohibits discrimination against homosexuals, but there is no homosexual marriage. Civil weddings are carried out at the municipal offices by the mayor or by members of the municipal council who are authorised by the mayor. The procedure is very simple, but it is best to contact the municipal office quite some time in advance to arrange for the type of marriage that you want. A fee of €128.15 is payable or
€281.90 if you wish to arrange the marriage urgently. Information can be obtained from the Union of Cyprus Municipalities (+357 22 445170).
Religious weddings are conducted at the churches of many Christian denominations in Cyprus, in particular at Orthodox and a small number of Catholic churches. There are also Maronite and Armenian churches and a number of mosques. Information can be obtained from Holy Episcopate of Cyprus by telephoning +357 22 55 46 00.
When someone dies, a death certificate has to be issued by a doctor (in specific cases a coroner’s report is issued) and a form has to be completed and sent to the office of the local eparch.
More information is available on the website of the district administrations.
